South Carolina Legal Services (SCLS) is a non-profit law firm.  We provide free legal services in a wide variety of civil (non-criminal) legal matters to eligible low income residents of South Carolina.  Our mission is to provide legal services to protect the rights and represent the interests of low income South Carolinians.

EMERGENCY ADMISSION: Help for mental conditions

Mental health conditions are prevalent, and, according to some estimates, affect 40% of adults.  But what if the person close to you suffering from mental illness is not willing to seek medical treatment?  In South Carolina, you have options by which a court will order the person suffering to receive medical treatment.  One of these is Emergency Admission.  We walk you through a step-by-step process.

New grants, more legal aid

SCLS has recently received two grants which will allow us to help more South Carolinians.  The first grant, from the Area Agencies on Aging (AAA), provides funds for legal services for all seniors over the age of 60 with a wide range of legal issues.  The second grant, funded by the SC Attorney General’s Office, will allow us to automate pleadings and forms necessary to file a petition for an order of protection.

SCServes Network

This fall, SCLS became a part of the SCServes Network.  It is the first coordinated network of public, private, and non-profit organizations working together to serve veterans and their families.  We receive case referrals from SCServes and transfer them to our local offices for legal assistance.  The types of cases that fall under this category are consumer, education, family, housing, health, employment, public benefits, and wills and estates.  You can learn more about SCServes on their official website: http://scserves.americaserves.org/
