NEWSLETTER / September 2017

South Carolina Legal Services (SCLS) is a non-profit law firm.  We provide free legal services in a wide variety of civil (non-criminal) legal matters to eligible low income residents of South Carolina.  Our mission is to provide legal services to protect the rights and represent the interests of low income South Carolinians.

When Tonya and her four children moved to South Carolina in March of 2015, her father Jack Murrow thought it would be a turning point for her. Instead, Tonya reverted back to her old ways of irresponsible behavior, drugs, and abandonment of the children. With the help of SCLS, Jack and his wife Nancy had to become the parents these four children never had.

In 2012, Congress introduced a new program to help address the growing concern about the condition of the aging public housing complexes.  The program implementation led to some confusion, which in turn led to some tenants not receiving the requisite termination notices.  SCLS remedied the issue and saved affordable housing not only for our clients but for others in the community.

Voices for Civil Justice conducted a study into the public opinion on the state legal aid and access to the civil legal justice. In the next few months, we will be sharing some of those findings with you.

Support the most traditional and familiar form of services to ensure access to the civil justice – namely, having a lawyer.

Support developing more affordable payment systems like co-payments or sliding-scale fees so working and middle class families can get the legal help they need.
